| Just another day!!! - Not really, just a trip up the shop when we passed a galgo (Spanish Greyhound) soaking up the sun in a shop doorway, well that’s what we thought as we drove past him. On our return journey we decided to stop and "take a look" only to find him bleeding from the head with a deep cut, also his back leg was turned back to front and his tail was nearly severed and held on by a piece of skin. As we picked him up to rush him to our vet his tail dropped off. There were pieces of stone embedded in his skin and his bottom lip was hanging from his jaw. The leg is the biggest problem, our vets can repair the rest but the saddest thing of all is the amount of people that passed him by and never gave him a glance. Thank goodness that we have a fantastic vet! The Galgo is now called Chester. |

For those of you who saw the Greyhound we found in the street who had been run over by a vehicle, here are some pictures of him now. His superficial wounds have healed,"hence the white patches" all over, and he has to be exercised as many times as we can do and massage the leg whenever we can.The hole at the top of his broken leg is where he has three metal rods holding the brake in place. He has gained a little weight and is a good boy with his food, mainly chicken,as his mouth is still quite tender. He still has a long way to go and will see the specialist sometime next week to check on his progress. Already we have a strong bond between us and he has the makings of a very fine dog |

URGENT DONATIONS NEEDED!!! - A Galgo (Greyhound) was left tied up
outside Pepis Refugio The dogs were barking as normal but Alan and Jane new the different barks and this meant a new arrival. Alan walked down to the gate with a small torch only to see two green glows at the gate; yes it was Marko (his new name). When Alan reached the gate he saw Marko lying on the frosty ground a beautiful boy but something told him not to grab him up, which was what he wanted to do. He saw a thin metal wire around his neck tied in a slip knot. If he panicked the wire would have tightened and cut into his neck so he sat on the ground and talked to him until he thought he was happy with him. This was a sight he will never ever forget, Marko looked at Alan his eyes as if to say 'Sorry but it's not my fault that I am here' that hurt him even more. He then felt confident to pick him up; he was ready to be helped. Alan took the wire noose from his neck and cuddled him up telling him nobody will hurt him again, His pelvis looked dislocated and he was unable to walk properly but Alan had no idea what the extend of the problem was as Marco's hip was very bad, the ball joint had risen high up his hip and was wearing out part of the bone as you can see in the x-ray, also the injury was old and tissues and other things had started to develop around the ball joint and the hip cavity. Pepis being greatly overworked & understaffed and short on funds, we offered to take the injured galgo and two other dogs, as its possible to home them quicker here in Coin, so my wife (Janice from A.I.D), went to the refuge, which is in Pedrera, Seville to collect the three dogs. We had no room at the time so our friends at Arca Noah took them in. They will look after Marko so that he can put some weight on before the operation as the poor thing is skin and bones and hopefully by then enough funds will be raised by A.I.D., the Galgo Rescue in Belgium and Arca Noah to pay for the operation and after treatment, which will be about 2500 Euros.
FOOTNOTE- Pepis Refugio would like to say that they are very great full for AID and others for their kind offer of help in this very difficult time

| Elisha - Sad to report that today while we were out our dear Elisha was stolen from our refuge. We are so upset for poor Elisha. She was born in May 2009. She was our newest intake. She was abandoned at the refuge with an injury to her head which resulted in her eye being injured permanently. She has made an incredibly fast recovery and she was now bouncy and happy, although she was rather put out at being put out in the refuge after having the comfort and company of our house. The first picture was when she first came. The second is how she looked now |
UNA - Was born approx April 2010. She was a new arrival at refuge. Found laying
down on the street in poor condition, skinny.Una has bad back leg.
After examination at the vets it was discovered an old injury caused by being hit by a car. The injury has resulted in muscle wastage in the leg.
Una needs good food to gain weight and a lot of exercises to rebuild new muscle on injured leg.
UPDATE - Una's muscle wastage on back leg is gone thanks to everydays exercising - running after ball in the yard.
After moving to outside kennel Una became very stressed and got badly sick with mange. Now mange is treated and Una feels better.
Una is still waiting her special person who would walk with her, throw ball and just love her the way she is - young, cheerful lady.
Sad to report that UNA hes lost her fight against Mainge tonight and our vet had to put her to sleep. We all tried our best for her but she just would not respond to any treatment.
OOCTOBER 2011

Animals in Distress (A.I.D.) The dog rescue charity based in Coin, Malaga have now come on board to help us in 2011 and every month they are sending us food supplies for the dogs, they are networking to try to home some of our dogs and they also trying to raise awareness about our refuge here and abroad.
Ou thanks to Joe from Animals In Distress (A.I.D.) for designing and maintaining our new website free of charge.
The Italian Job - On September 26th thirty two people attended another evening at the villa of Nick and Mo Bishop to raise funds for Pepi’s Refuge.
On this occasion Italian cuisine was on the menu ,with a range of authentic food on offer ,including a variety of pizzas ,penne Bolognese ,dulce domestica, broschettas and much more, all prepared by Nick and Mo and their guest Geoff on holiday from the UK.
The bar, serving a variety of drinks, was skillfully manned by Alan and Pat and later in the evening Jane ran a raffle, which raised 76 euros. Many thanks to Pat and Sheila for the beautiful glass bowl they donated to the lucky number ticket.
Soft background music was provided by, among others, Andrea Bocelli, (CD unfortunately as he was busy that day),and this all added to the atmosphere of a very pleasant evening. Most importantly the event raised more than 300 euros towards much needed funds for Pepi’s Refuge.
Special thanks go to Geoff, who gave up part of his holiday to help prepare some really great food and of course to all those who supported the Italian evening and last but never least to Alan and Jane for continuing to take in, care for and rehome the dogs.
The next evening is already being planned and several themes have been suggested, so watch this space as tickets will be limited.

28/08/10 Misting system Installed - Pepi’s now has a misting system in all of the pens. This has been one of the most prolonged hot spells on record so the dogs really benefit from the misting and look great under the fine water mists!

07/03/10 - Ten dogs go to UK for rehoming - Emma & Steve from Portsmouth, who recently adopted Roda, decided to put out an appeal to friends and family to try and get 8 dogs over to SOS in the UK, so that they could be rehomed. They felt they needed to do something as most of the dogs we want to rehome have been at Pepis for over a year. The appeal went so well that they have managed to get the funds for 10 dogs and have some money left over to start fundraising for the exercise area. With the help of CHAIN, the dogs will hopefull be in transit in the near future.
They plan to fundraise over the summer with car boots etc. so hopefully when there is no-one to walk the dogs they can still run around with freedom. Will keep you posted on how they are doing. If you are in the UK and would like to donate towards this project please email Emma on emmanicoll69@hotmail.com
With the help from the following people, we have managed to raise £870:-
Jan Tunnell, Pauline Bailey, Dom Jackson, Cathy Jupp, Brenda Burnett, Sally Cronin, Emma Walch, Annette White, Val Beck, Julia Connor, Jane Offer, Barbara Symons, Eileen Giles & Val Perryment.

14/01/10 - Pepi’s receives much needed help to stop flooding - Pepi’s has been badly hit by the very heavy rains that have fallen now for more than four weeks in Andalucia. The amount of rainfall has been exceptional and has caused significant flooding and a lot of damage in many areas.
At Pepi’s the main problem has been the flooding of the house where Alan and Jane have dogs too badly sick or injured to go into the kennels outside. Water and sewage poured into the house on several occasions leading to the ground floor having to be evacuated and the dogs moved to the first floor.
Two of the dogs, very badly injured galgos, with broken legs, one having a pin to hold his leg in place had to be moved. No easy task, particularly when there is no light, other than torches or candles, as the generator became waterlogged and gave up!
Pepi’s appealed for help and several people have kindly been able to respond. Some regular volunteers have braved the conditions to help clear mud from the outside kennels, Les, from ‘Pet-tags’ has donated some heavy duty pond water pumps.
Apart from the relief this will bring to Pepi’s it really does prove the value of the recently formed Andalucian Animal Welfare Network and demonstrates that people working together can find solutions to any kind of problem.

Sept 20th - A Greek Evening - On a lovely September evening an unusual fundraising event was held in aid of Pepi’s Refuge thanks to the generosity of Nick and Mo Bishop, in their beautiful garden just outside Estepa.
On entering this charming garden, drifting with butterflies and the scents of flowers and aromatic herbs, we were immediately welcomed with a drink by our kind hosts.
Tables and chairs were set out invitingly beside the pool, and Greek music wafted unobtrusively from a window, lending a special Greek atmosphere to a truly idyllic scene. Meanwhile Nick and Mo kept everyone well supplied with ‘nibbles’ including almonds from their garden, and huge marinated olives as large as plums, and a selection of other delicacies.
They were helped of course by the refuge owners Alan Brian, who did a sterling job manning the ‘mini bar’, and his wife Jane who took charge of the administrative side.
As enticing aromas of Greek cooking assailed us from within the house, people chatted and got to know each other outside; people from different areas but all with one common aim, to help the animals. There were groups of people from the surrounding area including Campillos, Mollina and Aguadulce, Lora de Estepa and of course Estepa itself. Meanwhile a varied selection of drinks, including heady Greek ‘Ouzo’ and Retsina wine could be bought at the ‘mini bar’ all in aid of the Refuge.
Once we were invited to enter the house, we were presented with a dazzling, mouth watering array of Greek dishes all prepared by our hosts including starters, main courses, tsatsiki and houmous dips, salads, etc. There was the indispensable Feta cheese, stuffed vine leaves, meatballs, Moussaka, ‘Fassolakia me Patates Yahni’ a (a casserole of green beans and potatoes) and ‘Prassopita’, a delicious leek and egg pie to mention just a few of the dishes on offer. We could hardly fit the generous amounts of food onto our plates!
All this was served with a free drink of our choice, so I could not resist trying Greek ‘Ouzo’, a first for me. Needless to say, it goes down very well being similar in aniseed flavour to French ‘Pernod’, or ‘Ricard’.
As dusk fell and people began to take their leave, a raffle was held with all the numbered entry tickets; the prize a couple of bottles of good wine, and the cost of the tickets just 12 euros. A total of 28 people attended this event, and the generous sum of around 250 euros (to be finalised) was raised for the refuge.
Nick and Mo will soon be hosting another fabulous evening in aid of Pepi’s. So if you missed the Greek evening then don’t miss out on the Italian evening;great food, great company, and best of all, in aid of a good cause. Watch this space!
